By Richard Romando

If youre a new boat owner, you obviously need accessories. Before you launch your boat there are certain accessories that are essential for on the water and on shore. Accessories include, boating radios, safety equipment, fish finders, seats, blinds and carpeting. Accessories used to dock and anchor your craft are also very important items. There are several kinds of docking ropes available. Anchors must be heavy enough to keep the craft moored, but not too heavy to increase the overall weight of the boat when sailing.

There are also boating accessories that allow you to personalize your craft. There are hundreds of accessories that can give your boat a unique look that reflects your personality. Lighting, marine fixtures and hinges can be custom designed to your specifications, and you can decide what you want changed on your boat or what youd like to keep the same.

The point is, there are many ways to accessorize your boat and you can find thousands of accessories and ideas in your local marine shop or online. There are all kinds of options available to make your boating experience the ultimate in style and enjoyment. Check out your options and have fun.

Always wear a lifejacket or personal flotation device! Don't just have it in the boat, pick one and wear it. The vast majority of Canadian boating victims were not wearing a lifejacket or PFD when they drowned. You can compare trying to don a lifejacket or PFD in an emergency to trying to put on your seatbelt in the middle of a car crash.

Personal water crafts present safety concerns in terms of their ability to steer. Since steering is achieved from aiming the nozzle of the pump jet, there is no rudder involved, which means the craft cannot be steered in an emergency breakdown situation. Also, steering is significantly reduced when the throttle is not being applied; this leads to dangerous situations because it is against one's instinct in an emergency to accelerate. However, turning is not effective without doing so. After market products are available to help with this problem, including different types of rudder steering systems such as Cobra Jet Steering. In 2001 Sea-doo added the O.P.A.S. (Off-Power Assisted Steering) system which uses rudders installed on the rear sides of the PWC to assist in steering.

All the woodwork on the boat should be varnished every year to keep it looking smart, though check with the specification of the varnish to see whether it needs to be carried more or less regularly. Brasswork and Chromework should also be kept polished, not only to keep it looking good but also to stop deterioration.
