Boat Insurance

By Alison Cole

One of the supreme delights that a person can obtain is by possessing his own boat. It takes us to the past when adventure on the high seas was a real experience and man was the complete ruler of his dominion as a commander of his ship.

At present there are few places where a common man can be master and leader of his own fate, but a boat is one of them. But possessing a boat is not without peril or cost. Boat insurance is necessary for shielding such an expensive asset.

The two chief aspects of boat insurance are legal responsibility, or security and insurance; and property loss. In some respects, they are managed the same way as automobile or home policies.

When an individual insures his boat for liability, it guards an individual against harm to another person's assets brought about by the boat. It also has provisions for lawful protection, in case one is charged for something that is protected under the boat insurance.

However, there are certain delicate differences from an automobile policy when it comes to loss and damage insurance. The characteristic coverage for loss is either 'actual cash value' (ACV), or 'agreed upon' value.

Boat insurance, which is agreed upon for worth, has a money amount printed in the policy, which is the sum, compensated for complete loss. Limited damages are restored at 'for new' prices, implying that there is no reduction imposed, apart from high wear matter like sails, and some machinery. This is the extra-costly alternative to cover a boat.

An authentic cash value policy indicates that if a boat is a complete loss, one will obtain the existing market price, not including the deductible, and suitable reduction for the age and state of the boat during loss.

Years ago, inflatable boats where the most expensive boats on the market and only a few people could afford them. This was due to the use of exotic materials and the hours of meticulous hand labor which went into their construction. Now, the boats still use the best materials, but in the late seventies, the companies started investing millions of dollars in computer-driven assembly equipment. This enabled prices to be dramatically reduced as economies of scale rose, enabling more and more consumers to enjoy affordable inflatable boating. Zodiac and its sister company, Sevylor, are now the leading low-cost producer thanks to these technological investments. So be wary of inflatable prices substantially below the Zodiac/Sevylor line. They may be either produced in developing countries by unskilled labor, or marketed by companies who are unaware of the importance of profit margins. They will be glad to see your dollar today but may be unwilling or unable to fix a problem later, or supply that much needed spare part.

Regular Sailing Yacht Maintenance Tasks - What needs to be done and how often?

Sun, 29 Apr 2007 15:49:26 +0200
All this talk of sanding and varnishing leads me to the thought that there are plenty of other things that need to be checked over/maintained on a regular basis if we're to stay afloat safely and remain healthy on a sailing yacht.

The Joys of Boating

By Stefan Rockhaus

One of the most enjoyable things that you can do in this life is boating. It provides such a peaceful and serene atmosphere that you cannot help but be at peace during the hours you spend on a boat. Boating is something that is enjoyed by many people for many different reasons. One of these reasons is that it allows you to get away from the everyday grind that has become part of your life. When you are out on the sea or lake, it is just you, your boat, and the water. Nothing else matters at this point. Sure, you can equip your boat with many of the amenities of life today, but that does not take away from the fact that it is you and your boat.

Another reason that people enjoy boating is that it is an enjoyable hobby. It might not seem like it is that much of a hobby, but for some people, it becomes a way of life. There are those who enjoy this activity so much that they live on their boats, which are commonly known as house boats. This activity becomes appealing to a great number of people because of the fact there is a certain level of uncertainty in it. You must be on your toes and prepared for anything at any time. You can control what you are going to do, but when it comes to the water, you have no control, only reactions.

If you are going to become serious about boating, it is critical that you ensure the proper up keep of your boat. One of the most critical parts of this process is to wash down the exposed layers of your boat regularly. Although the equipment on a boat is made to withstand certain conditions, there are never any guarantees that water wont get in to the wrong parts your boat. The proper maintenance on your boat and the main areas will allow your boat to lead a long and happy life at sea. Maintaining a boat that you know will be dependable is something that can provide much needed comfort in a world of uncomfortable seas.

Boating is something that should be enjoyed, but for every activity that is serious, there are responsibilities that must be met. You are the only one in charge of your boat and it falls on you to keep your boat in as good shape as possible.

Ketches are similar to a sloop, but there is a second shorter mast to the stern of the mainmast, but forward of the rudder post. The second mast is called the mizzen mast and the sail is called the mizzen sail. A ketch can also be cutter-rigged with two headsails.

Speedboats or powerboats are normally streamlined boats with very powerful engines in them. They range in size from the small Zapcats which were originally designed from surf rescue crafts in South Africa, and although they are only powered by a 50 horsepower engine they can go very fast reaching speeds of 50mph, as they are very light. They are relatively inexpensive and because they are inflatable they can be set up and packed away easily. Seadoo Sportsters are another attractively priced option at around 20000

Piracy Attempts On Cruising Yachts - Analysis of the 1st 9 months of 2007.

Fri, 16 Nov 2007 16:04:23 +0200
This analysis of reported attempted attacks on Yachts sailing the world has been carried out by Cruiserlog Moderators in order to evaluate the events/incidents from a cruisers point of view. It is not meant to be a criticism of the ICC International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Report Center's Q3 report for 2007. They receive reports from ships, boats and yachts and précis these for publication in their weekly piracy report which is then widely circulated. It is probable that the IMB is not able to check the veracity of the initial incident, therefore having to accept it at face value even though it may sound incomplete, inaccurate or even exaggerated.

To All Cruisers - Information On Cruising Expenses.

This is not "how much does it cost to cruise." This isn't "How much did you spend in Fiji?" This is, "what do you spend on a monthly or weekly basis in the various ports while cruising?" It doesn't have to be exact, and shouldn't be overblown, but this is intended to buttress the arguments of many destination-based businesses that cruising sailors are good for the local economy. This is a subject near and dear to my heart, because it isn't just Fiji who discounts the cruising sailor as a benefit to the economy, and it's the powerful resorts who get the ear of government in most economies dependent upon the tourist dollar.

When Buying a Boat - Tips for Test Driving a Boat for Sale

By Capablanca Fisher

When deciding on a boat with the boat dealer. You should not worry about the time factor. You are the one who wanted to buy a boat and not the boat dealer. So, he should spend some time and effort with you to make the sale.

The most important thing here is that you should make quality time when evaluating the boat. And not browsing through the shiny brochures or reading the testimonials they provide for you. You should even forget about all the hype that our boats are better that theirs. These are all usually gimmicks pulled out by the dealers to make the sale.

After that, you should test drive the boat. Request for one if it is not voluntarily provided. This is the only way you can experience for yourself the conditions you will be in when driving the boat.

Sometimes, you may be asked to put up a deposit and make a deal subject to satisfactory test run as a way for the dealers to discourage freeloaders who just want to have a boat ride.

Make sure you either get a test run in a similar boat model that you ordered or have a satisfactory re-demo clause in your contract if the demo is not possible for the moment. If you test run in a boat with 50 horsepower higher than the boat you ordered the feeling and satisfaction you will received in your new boat will definitely not the same with the one you test drive with.

When financing the boat, you will certainly be asked to put down some deposit with the dealer first. This is to give the dealer some fall back just in case you wanted to change or cancel your order as a boat is not cheap.

Just be aware that the deposit required depends on the price of the boat and the commonness of purchase of the boat according to the dealer. The more common someone ask for that particular boat model, the easier it is for the dealer to sell the boat to other customers if someone else cancelled their order.

There you have it. Apply these tips when buying for a boat and you are on your ways to become one happy boater.

Hints On watercrafts

Traditional sailboats are monohulls, but multi-hull catamarans and trimarans are gaining popularity. Monohull boats generally rely on ballast for stability, and generally are known as displacement hulls. This stabilizing ballast can be on the order of multiple tons of lead, for a 12m (39 Ft.) boat. However, it creates two problems; one, that this gives the monohull a tremendous inertia, making it less maneuverable and reducing its acceleration. Secondly, if the boat ever fills with water, it will sink immediately, without question.

Day sailing yachts are usually small sub-20-feet (6 m) in length. Sometimes called dinghies, they often have a retractable keel, centerboard, or daggerboard. Most day sailing yachts do not have a cabin, as they are designed for hourly or daily use and not for overnight journeys. At best they may have a 'cubby', where the front part of the hull has a raised solid roof to provide a place to store equipment or to provide basic shelter from wind or spray.
