There is no engineering limit to the size of jet boats, though the validity of their use depends a lot on the type of application. Classic prop-drives are generally more efficient and economical at low speeds (up to about 20 knots) but as boat speed increases beyond this the extra hull resistance generated by struts, rudders, shafts etc means waterjets are more efficient in the 20-50 knot range. Also, in situations where you need very large propellers turning at slow speeds (such as tug boats) the equivalent size waterjet would be simply too big to be practical. For these reasons the vast majority of waterjet units are installed in high speed vessels and in particular situations where shallow draught, manoeuvrability and load flexibility are main concerns.

The use of a jet ski or any other personal watercraft is often limited by state or local laws. There may be helmet, age and flotation device regulations as well, so jet ski owners should always check before putting their PWCs in unfamiliar waters. Speedboats and other large recreational watercraft often cannot avoid collisions with smaller jet skis. Irresponsible actions on a jet ski can also lead to dangerous encounters with swimmers and traditional water skiiers. There is also a temptation for some jet ski drivers to deliberately drive through the wake of larger boats.

Inflatable boats are the ideal yacht tender because of all their basic advantages including: lightness, stability and buoyancy. Unlike regular dinghies, they're easy to lift on board. With special rubstrake glued or thermobonded to their sides, inflatables won't damage or mark your yacht's hull or deck. Purchasing an inflatable tender almost guarantees the elimination of scuff marks and scratches on your yacht forever.

Questions regarding communications while sailing and food preparation.

Link] What did you use for communications while sailing? Did you have a satellite phone? We have a laptop, while we are at sea, do you have any suggestions for internet access ( I know this can get vastly expensive, where do you draw the line at spending?). A further simple question. In the the Caribbean, what is the best way to clean fruit & vegetables? I am really looking forward to the markets, but am skeptical about the flies that may (or may not) be crawling over them....

Boat Accessory, Boat Fenders Storage Solutions

By Andrew Dvorak

If you are wondering what to do with your boat accessories, specifically boat fenders, and how to store all that stuff, listen up to the following suggestion.

Storage on boats is always a challenge. There are storage compartments under bench seats, under single seats, in a side hole, or if your boat is large enough, there may be a storage locker or closet. Of course, there is usually somewhere to put your boat accessories: boat fenders, towels, tools, spare engine parts, anchors and an extra propeller; but lets face it, boat accessory storage is at a premium.

The trick is to own the type of boat accessories which respect economy of space. Not everything can be broken down and folded up, but you can think ahead before purchasing your boat fenders and other accessories. Now, at the beginning of the boating season, is the best time to prepare, look at the overall picture, and get organized. You want space for your passengers and their gear to be a priority, not have your boating accessories take up all of your people space.

Lets look at Boat Fenders. You need them, of course, but do you need them all the time? No. Are you tired of them taking up so much space or rolling around on the floor? Yes, of course. The solution is to have boat bumpers you can deflate, compact and store in a small space like the new Inflatable/Deflatable Boat Fenders from Boat Bunkers. These boat bumpers are truly space saving and convenient.

Boat Bunkers Inflatable Boat Fenders are made of a high-impact absorbing material. They inflate in seconds with just a few strokes of the hand or foot pump through a high-volume, one-way recessed valve for the occasions when you need them. Now heres the beauty of it. When youre done using your boat fender, simply unscrew the cap. It instantly deflates and you can roll it up. You can fit four boat fenders and the pump in the compact tote bag which comes with the set. They can match your boat with a variety of available colors which include black, dark blue, light blue, red and green. They come in four sizes of small, medium, large and extra large. The extra large boat bumper inflates with a handy foot pump. These boat bumpers are great quality, come with a heavy-duty abrasion-resistant cover, a built-in strap and buckle for convenient attachment to your boat, and have a manufacturers Lifetime Guaranty. The whole kit, which includes four boat fenders, the pump and tote bag, starts at only $79.96 for the small size, a very affordable package price.

I use these boat fenders myself and really feel they are an asset no boat owner should be without. I am a big believer in anything useful which is more efficient, compact, and space-saving. These boat fenders really fit that bill and are just what you need this season to make your life a little easier. Including these boat fenders in your boat accessories list will improve your boating experience simply because you are saving space.

Tips About how to buy a sailboat

If you want to run shallow rivers, you need a jet boat. Jet boats come in different types and sizes, but they all have one thing in common they depend on a high-pressure column of water pushed out of the engine to propel the boat. They can run in less water depth because there is no prop and lower unit hanging down to snag the river bottom. With the right boat, a highly skilled driver, and a consistent bottom, you can run in as little as two-to-three inches of water.

Some of the more advanced inflatable boats, like Zodiac's Fastroller, feature a special High-Pressure inflatable air floor. Made of two layers of fabric, connected by thousands of tiny "drop stitches", this floor can be inflated to a high pressure, creating a floor with rigidity equal to sheet of plywood a fraction of the weight. Best of all, they can be completely deflated and stowed in only minutes without removing any parts. This high pressure air floor is softer on knees and backsides too.

Speedboats or powerboats are normally streamlined boats with very powerful engines in them. They range in size from the small Zapcats which were originally designed from surf rescue crafts in South Africa, and although they are only powered by a 50 horsepower engine they can go very fast reaching speeds of 50mph, as they are very light. They are relatively inexpensive and because they are inflatable they can be set up and packed away easily. Seadoo Sportsters are another attractively priced option at around 20000

Basic Boating Safety Tips

By Lydia Quinn

Millions of boaters and their passengers will go out on the water this summer, whether on lakes, rivers or the ocean. Before you go out, make sure to brush up on safety with these basic boating safety tips.

Preparation

Don't forget to check the weather and take along appropriate clothing and supplies for whatever weather you may encounter. Don't forget to get a copy of the local boating rules, each state and sometimes each county will have specific boating rules and regulations that you must follow. Don't forget to get whatever permits needed should you be fishing, diving or engaging in some other recreational activity. Make sure you have maps and charts on hand for the area you will be boating in, and plan out your course ahead of time. Make sure your engine and other mechanical and electrical equipment is in working order before taking your boat out. Make sure you have proper amounts of oil and fuel for your entire trip. Pack extra if needed. Make sure to brush up on all maritime warning signals and symbols. Double check to make sure you have your boat registration and boat owner's manual as well as any appropriate licenses on board. Make sure you have enough water, food and protection from the sun on your boat for yourself and every passenger. Don't drink and boat, it's virtually the same as drinking and driving and just as dangerous. You should always observe speed limits in every area.

Safety Equipment

Don't forget the most important safety equipment for boating, a life vest for every single member of your party and a working fire extinguisher. Thousands of people drown each year. Few people who drown have a life vest on. Make sure every member of your party wears their life vest when in your boat. Don't forget special life vests for any children and pets who may be joining you. There are specially sized life vests for every size and shape of person and most animals.

Be Observant and Courteous

When out on the water, be observant. Watch out for other boats, jet skis, swimmers, surfers, rowers and anyone else in or around the water. Be considerate and don't take too long at the boat ramp.

Tread Lightly

Avoid boating in environmentally sensitive areas and be considerate of wildlife you encounter. Avoid spilling fuel, trash or other debris in the water. Go very slow in areas of shallow water. Only use designated boat ramps to load and unload your boat. Try to avoid causing large wakes in the water to lessen soil and shore erosion.

Using these basic boating safety tips, you should be able to enjoy your time on the water safely and with less worry.

Because of their relatively low cost and the freedom they afford to owners, personal water craft are widely used for recreation. However, many U.S. states require safety training for personal watercraft operators. Modern PWC include a lanyard attached to a dead man's switch, to turn off the vessel if the operator falls off -- provided the lanyard is attached to the operator.
